With the win of Republican candidate in Massachusetts senate race, the prospects of sweeping healthcare reform seem to be dim. In fact, to be frank, the reform was not much of sweeping anyway. It had some good elements but there was nothing being done to control cost.
It is common consensus that Democrats are going to take some time to let the dust settle. Speaker Nancy Pelosu said, ” We have to know what our possibilities are and that means in both houses and with the white house.” Sen. Chuck Schumer deciding on the process should not take that long. “That doesn’t mean we’re going to sit here and twiddle our thumbs for weeks and weeks and weeks, but it’ll take a few days to figure out what the best solution is,” he said.
Pelosi said, ““One way or another, those areas of agreement that we have will have to be advanced, whether it’s by passing the Senate bill with any changes that can be made or just taking pieces of it.” She also said that House members will not support the Senate health bill as is.
Democrats are concerned with poll numbers and want to show to the public that they are doing more to address the immediate needs such as employment. On the otherside, the labor unions and liberal interest groups are pushing for healthcare reform. Healthcare industries are not necessarily going to be happy either.
They have tons of money spent and potential of getting over 30 million new customers.
Bottom line, I said here long time ago that unless all work together, no one is going to get anything. The failure of healthcare is not a failure for democrats or republicans. It is a failure for American economy, for american people, and american businesses.
I hope all will get together to play a positive some game…right now it is not even a zero sum. It is in fact a negative sum game.
