After about a century of trying, last year was the first time a comprehensive healthcare legislation has passed both houses of congress. However, with the crushing defeat of Democratic candidate in Massachusetts, there has been doubt of such a legislation becoming a law.
There has been several possibilities being discussed of the passage or lack of a healthcare bill. With the republican party so intent on blocking any progress of the bill, it requires a super majority to pass the bill.
Today in the state of union address, President Obama reminded both parties that one has one of the biggest majority in this decades and other one has the responsibility to. They can not make super majority a necessity for passage of every bill.
Note that Republican Senators have been voting no as group for almost every bill.
However, the President said that he would like the two parties to pass a healthcare bill that does guarantee coverage and is more patient centric and less business centric.
A healthcare reform is essential for the robust economic growth of America and to its businesses, be they healthcare or manufacturing, be they government or finance.
We will wait and see what options emerge in next week or so.
THT believes that insurance companies should support a legislation and rearrange their business model. They are wrongfully portrayed as the villains of healthcare. While they have their share of the blame as I have pointed out that they have failed to cut cost. I must also say that they are not the one who are responsible for growth.
The innovation they need are in how to reign in cost.
