Healthcare cost keeps on rising. One of the contributor is intake of harmful chemicals without knowledge. These create additional strain on already stretched out healthcare system. For example, plastic containers may harm your brain. Bisphenol A (BPA), the chemical used in making plastic containers, might impair many brain functions such as learning and remembering.
The Canadian researchers fear that it could be a factor behind Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia and depression. BPA is globally used in making plastic water bottles, baby food bottles, food containers, etc. In their study, the researchers at the University of Guelph, near Toronto, found that BPA might be leaking into the solid or liquid foods kept in the plastic containers.

It reminds me of several situations in the past, lead for example. This brings an excellent point that these situations do incur many excess health care costs, but do the upper echelons in healthcare see this as opportunity? I’m sure every physician would support a more precise vetting process of chemicals used in daily products, but am not aware of any concerted physician effort. Not to say that there isn’t, just that I’m not aware.
Happily Walmart and some other major stores have banned these plastic baby bottles. It does make me wonder how many of the developmental problems I see on a daily basis, are perhaps due in part to these.
Another concern is the number of people who eat from these containers daily. My husband, for instance, has eaten a microwaved warmed dinner from them, an average of 4 evenings a week for the past 12 years. I did try to substitute a glass container, but he found it inconvienent. With a strong history of Alzheimers in his family it may be interesting to others to see what comes down the road, but personally it’s too close to home. Of course much research also shows a link between Alzheimers and insulin reaction in the brain, but the answer may be any years down the road.
Parents can replace plastic toys like kids educational toys with wood ones from family companies like http://www.TagToys.com that make all their toys in the USA.
